The Awakening Vocabulary

  1. Grotesque (adj) distorted and unnatural in shape or size; abnormal and hideous
2.  Exuberance (n) joyful enthusiasm

3.   Saucy (adj) improperly forward or bold

4.   Dissuade (v) turn away from by persuasion

5.   Soiree (n) a party of people assembled in the evening (usually at a private house)

6. Dissent (v) to disagree with methods/ goals

7. Pleasantry (n) a courteous social remark used to initiate or facilitate conversation

8. Pittance (n) a very small or inadequate amount of money paid to someone as an allowance or wage.

9.  Idiosyncrasy (n) a characteristic, habit, mannerism that is peculiar to an individual

10. Vixen (n) a female fox; an ill-tempered or quarrelsome woman

11. Rapt (adj) deeply engrossed or absorbed

12. Coercion (n) the use of force or intimidation to obtain compliance





1. Gaunt (adj) very thin especially from disease or hunger or cold

2. Notwithstanding (adv) despite anything to the contrary (usually following a concession)

3. Incessant (adj) Continuing without interruption; ceaseless

4. Languor (adj) lack of energy or vitality; sluggishness.

5. Naïveté (n) the state of being naïve; a naive remark or action

6. Sonorous (adj) having a sound that is deep, loud, and pleasant

7. Tumult (n) a state of great confusion or excitement (Tumultuous – adjective)

8. Ponderous (adj) of great weight, massive

9. Discern (v) to perceive or recognize; to distinguish mentally

10. Matronly (adj) maturely dignified or stately; of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a matron (married woman, guard or authority figure)
